Principal’s Message

Our annual Siblings Day was another huge success. We had brothers and sisters from a number of schools join us here at JCSRS to learn and play together. We all find this day truly ‘heart warming’ as we see so much love and support. You can pick this up from the photos and comments that Kelly has shared later in the newsletter. Thanks Kelly and the team for a well organised and happy day.

This evening we will join many colleagues and families for the opening of the ESF Art Exhibition: An Exploration of Art. We are proud to have our students’ work alongside their peers. We were also delighted to be part of the video showcasing the exhibition. Sally is passionate about all aspects of art and has done a great job organising the work and the video.

We also have an amazing opportunity to share the artistic talents of one of our students at an exhibition that opens at 10:30am on June 14 2019, at the Fringe Club. Not only will you have a chance to admire Darius’ artwork but you can help the PTA raise funds with all profits going to that group. You can purchase artwork and be part of the silent auction that includes a night at the superb East Hotel in Tai Koo Shing. Please come along and support this fabulous event. The official opening is at 6:00pm. For more details see the poster below. It’s a great pleasure to welcome back Josh Keefe who leads the ‘Move for Life’ dance program. Josh has just returned from his starring role in the ‘Dancing with the Stars’ television competition in Australia. We are very lucky to have him work with our students. You will see later in this newsletter that there is a summer camp here that Move for Life are running in our school hall. What a great way to stay fit and have fun over the summer break. You are also welcome to enrol your son or daughter in the Breeze Sports summer program. Many of you are familiar with the exciting activities that are available.

A number of students were fortunate to join their peers at the South Island School Sports for All swimming competition. Another wonderful inclusion opportunity – thanks Mike for supporting this.

On Monday we had Kevin Tibble from ESF join us for our staff meeting. Kevin shared with us toys and ideas we can use to promote coding and digital literacy. Carol and I also joined students at Sha Tin Junior School who were participating in a Makers Education workshop. The year 5 & 6 students worked with a kindergarten ‘buddy’ and together they designed and built games and models using a lot of recycled items. We have just been planning our first unit of work for the 2019-20 school year. The unit is called ‘Living in a Material World‘ (yes, we had a little dance to the song as well!). There is a strong focus on design and technology so we look forward to holding a Maker Workshop at JCSRS with our mainstream buddies.

You will receive an e-notice about the PTA Student Disco that is being held in our hall next Friday 31st May. It’s important you RSVP so we can cater accordingly and organise the after school bus run. It’s always a fun and happy event so I hope many of you are able to attend.

As you know we are introducing the new (very smart) school uniform in August 2019. We will have a ‘try on and order’ morning on Tuesday 18th June. Please book a time on the e-notice you receive to help us manage waiting times and make this a smooth and easy event. If you order on this day you are sure to have the new uniform ready for the start of the 2019-20 school year.

Showcase Silver Class

Time and Tide wait for no man. Silver class is progressing well into our Term 3 unit “Looking after Myself” and ASDAN modules “Telling Time”. Both of them are very practical and functional for the young adults in Silver class.

The Telling Time unit was kicked off by Maths Day where KGV and KJS students came and manned the Maths booths for us. The day provided a great social interaction opportunity for our students to practise their listening skills, as well as expressing their thoughts and ideas related to time telling.  In class, students have been practising how to refer to the clocks frequently every day in school. Rehaan, Chris, Adam, Oliver and Leo like to manipulate the hands on the classroom clock kit to tell time and play the bingo time game. Darius, Raffy, Paolo and Asfand love to play online time games and challenge themselves to solve time problems on the IXL Maths Apps.

Growing vegetables, greening our school and the composter sustainability projects tie in well with our unit “Looking After Myself”. The activities provide students with a good platform for not just learning to look after themselves but to look after our environment to better our health. Besides growing fresh salad leaves and herbs, they have also been collecting food waste to make organic compost and making orange enzyme pesticide. Our school garden is so well looked after that birds come to build nests to nurture their young.  

Silver class also decided to look into how to keep our bodies healthy. Students have weighed themselves and measured their height to set targets to challenge themselves. Bianca, our physiotherapist, has set a few exercises for them to work on until the end of term and students will mark their progress to find out how these exercises have benefited their wellbeing. Students are excited and have tried to outdo each other in their sessions. All in all, this is a fun filled unit for all of us to experience.

Curriculum

The Easter break saw the end of one unit and the start of our final unit of the year. We have recently completed ‘All systems go!’ which looked at some of the everyday systems our students interact with such as the library, shops and cafes, postal system and money systems. We had a talk from the MTR and classes visited libraries and the post office to see systems in action. This unit was designed to help students navigate some of the complexities of everyday life in a fun and engaging way and feedback from the staff is that the learning engagements were a big hit! We are now almost halfway through the short final term of this year so learning is well under way for our final unit:

 

This unit has a strong focus on personal, social and health education. Students are looking at changes to their body in relation to their own age and stage of development over varying amounts of time. We are exploring healthy food and exercise as well as the link between the body and mind. Emotional and sensory regulation is so important for many of our students and this unit will give us a chance to build on some ideas from term 1 where we talked about feelings. This term, classes are looking at mindful breathing and stretching amongst some of the many ways to help our students achieve a sense of wellbeing.

Our ASDAN Numeracy focus this term is time. We kicked off the term with a maths day focused on time concepts. Students will be looking at using analogue and digital clocks and making meaningful links between times of the day and activities. As with all aspects of the curriculum, learning engagements and specific objectives are differentiated for each student to ensure they are appropriate.
