Principal’s Message
A warm welcome back to term two. It’s been a smooth and busy start.
We are always looking for new ways to enable our students to practice skills and learning from the classroom into the real world. This is particularly important for students as they get closer to graduation and enter the world beyond school. This term we are delighted to have our colleagues at the ESF Centre support work experience for some of our students. In addition we are able to help the organisers of the ESF Hong Kong run by making the flags (with our KJS buddies) for the day. We do hope you can join us for the run, the poster is later in this newsletter. Jenny has also shared more information and photos of the work experience.
Teachers and therapists are busy assessing IEP goals and preparing to discuss, then write mid year reports. We will let you know when these are ready for you to access on the VLE. Remember that mid year meetings with parents are optional and you can liaise with your son or daughter’s class teacher. This term our unit of work is ‘All Systems Go!” with a focus on using money, library and postal systems. ASDAN continues with maths. The teachers and therapists have planned this together to ensure the learning is inclusive, meaningful and engaging. While Karen is on parenting leave we thank Holly for her leadership of the weekly collaborative inquiry meetings. This Friday we are all going to the new inclusive playground in Tuen Mun. It’s a nice way to start the term together and have this unique experience.
Last term we held a fundraising Walkathon with all students and staff participating. The student council met recently to make the final decision about where to donate the money in our local community We are happy to let you know that we continue to support Masarang with their work enabling sustainable communities ($9,145), Love Express supporting people with autism in Hong Kong ($4,572) and Feeding Hong Kong ($4,572). Thank you all for helping us to give back to the local and wider community.
This week you will receive an e-notice about the disco on Friday 25 January. This was very popular with students last year and we thank Cecile and the PTA for organising the event again. It’s very important we have your response to the notice so we can organise buses in the afternoon and prevent confusion with after school arrangements. We look forward to having as many students as possible here on the day. The poster invitation is included later in the newsletter.
We are also celebrating Chinese New Year with an afternoon assembly (see poster below for details). Parents are more than welcome to come along and join in the fun.
Recently I sent you all an email regarding the influenza season. You may well have seen information about the closing of an ESF kindergarten due to an outbreak of flu. We are doing all we can here at school to follow hygiene procedures to keep us all well. Thank you for supporting us by doing the same at home and keeping students away from school if they are unwell.
You will also see a message from our PTA about the weekend trip to Disneyland. Thank you to both the PTA and Disneyland for this wonderful opportunity.

Stephanie, one of our Speech Therapists will start her maternity leave after the CNY break. Her role will be covered by Kim Matthews. Kim is an experienced Speech Therapist also from Australia and will be with us until March 2020. Kim spent three days shadowing Stephanie this week so the handover will be smooth for our students. Please pop by and say hi to her in the next parent-teacher/therapist meetings.

Disneyland visit
Over 50 JCSRS families had the opportunity to visit Hong Kong Disneyland on Sunday 13 January 2019. As you can tell from the amazing photos, all the students had a great day with family and friends. We would like to thank Hong Kong Disneyland again for their generosity and support in providing us with the complimentary tickets.

Cooking Class for SEN Children
A Relaxed Performance of King Arthur’s Night (20 March)
Greetings from the Hong Kong Arts Festival. We are proud to announce a project called No Limits which will take place 15 – 31 March 2019. Co-presented by the Hong Kong Arts Festival and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, No Limits strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together through the provision of arts accessibility services.
With this in mind I would like introduce you to King Arthur’s Night by Neworld Theatre from Canada which we think might be suitable for your students. Not only does this production feature an integrated professional cast with actors from the Down Syndrome Research Foundation, BC, the performance on Wednesday, 20 March (6pm) will be a relaxed performance. Relatively new to Hong Kong, relaxed performances create a supportive atmosphere that is beneficial to audience members with sensory and communications disorders.

New World Theatre — King Arthur’s Night
An upside-down world. A betrayed love. An unwanted child. Animals learning to walk and talk. A revolt by the subjugated masses. A kingdom come undone. This isn’t the King Arthur you know.
Refined, brutal, crude and tender, King Arthur’s Night invites audiences to reject the idea that some experiences are inherently marginal, and instead witness those stories front and centre on stage. The production includes the fully integrated professional cast with actors from the Down Syndrome Research Foundation, a live band, as well as Hong Kong Children’s Choir.
