Principal’s Message
It’s a perfect time of year to hold our annual Walkathon. This year we are again fundraising for Masarang and a local charity that will be selected by our student council when they next meet. We are also lucky to have the wonderful support of students from KJS and the many parents who joined us on the day. Thanks to Jackie and Kelly for the great organisation. Parent sponsorship is greatly appreciated.
Our school was busy here on Wednesday evening with many parents taking the opportunity to talk with teachers and therapists about IEP goals and class programs. We know that the letter about the draft IEP went out a little late and some of you may not have received the notice. We are looking in to making this smoother and more reliable. Thank you for your patience.
Yesterday we celebrated our four staff who are expecting babies in this school year. Congratulations to Stephanie Eber, Karen Carmody, Venus Chan and our nurse Christine Cheung and their partners. We will keep you informed with staffing changes as they happen.
Remember it is our whole school sports day at Perth oval (just down the road) next Thursday. You are welcome to come along and join in the fun.
The mid term break is coming up. If you are interested in the Breeze sport camp held at school you will find the details later in this newsletter.
Warm Regards
Karin

Showcase – Emerald Class
Welcome to Emerald Class! We’ve started the year reacquainting ourselves to the routines, expectations, and to one another as we welcome a few new faces to the class and school. It’s been a wonderful opportunity getting to know one another and building new friendships.
This year in Emerald, one key learning priority is communication and function. We’ve been diving into the learning for our unit on “Express Yourself” starting first with emotions and the different ways we express our ideas. The key objective is to explore ways to express their ideas and feelings. We use literacy, art and music sessions to build in their understanding of feelings. Proloquo2go, BigMac switches, eye gaze, vocalisations and sign are the key tools of communication for Emerald.
Function is our other key priority for the students. Throughout the day, students have a wide range of opportunities in which to experience a variety of independent skills. One example of this has been in our cooking sessions. Students are baking and cooking simple and healthy foods. Our sessions are sensory, communication and math focus with an emphasis on making it adaptive for all of Emerald to access the session. Treats made are then sold in SENsations Cafe the next day.
It has been a wonderful start to to the year so far. We’re looking forward to exploring more learning in the months ahead!
