Principal’s Message

Our student council have been active this year organising a number of events. This week they led a Treasure Hunt for about thirty students from KJS. My goodness there was a lot of excitement as the students read the clues and then found the ‘treasure’ that enabled them to leave here with a bag of goodies. Thanks to Jenny and the team for a fun and inclusive event.

This week we were also delighted to host a group of drama students from Discovery College. They entertained students in all the classes and provided follow up activities that were engaging and fun. All performances were based on our current unit of work ‘We are the World’. Another opportunity for inclusion and learning across our ESF schools. Thanks to Holly at JCSRS and Danielle at DC for the great organisation.

On Monday all the teachers and therapists had long and in depth conversations about class groups for next school year. As you may well imagine this is never an easy job. Next year we will have ten new students join our eight classes. The focus of our discussions is always ‘what is best for the students’. We know we will never have the perfect fit but we all left the meeting feeling confident that we have done our very best and we are able to support each student to be the best they can be. I will email a letter to you on Wednesday 20 June to let you know the class for your son/daughter in 2018-19. On the next day we are hosting a ‘transition’ morning (9.30-11.30 where all students and staff will join together in the groups planned for August. Jenny and I will have time with parents in the library for morning tea and informal discussions.

You will have received an e-notice to invite you to the last parent meeting of the year. Remember to go to the VLE to see IEP evaluations, end of year reports and photos and other evidence of work and progress during the year. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday 14 June.

There are many other exciting end of year celebrations coming up. We have a special assembly to acknowledge and celebrate our graduating students and those leaving us on Friday 15 at 1.45-2.30. You are also welcome to join our special assembly on Friday 29 at 10.45-11.30. Remember school finishes at 11.30.

Remember that if you have put in an order for the JCSRS Yearbook please send a cheque for $150 as soon as possible. It’s great value for money, you will get many hours of enjoyment from it.

At this time of year we have to say sad farewells to some of our staff and this year we congratulated and thanked one of our dedicated and hard working support staff – Elza Luk. Elza has been at our school for 20 years – yes, 20 years of helping the students, the staff and being part of ESF. Staff commented on her boundless energy, her warm smile and helping to teach some of us Cantonese. We will miss her very much and wish her all the best for her retirement.

We will publish a final newsletter with photos but I will take this opportunity to thank you all for being our partners in education. It has been a productive and full year. It’s always a joy to see our students grow and learn. I wish you all the very best for a summer with family and friends.

Remember to look carefully at our website calendar for important dates, especially to start the school year. The first morning (8.50-11.30) for all students is on Tuesday 14 August and then full days from then. There is a meet the teacher, welcome presentation and PTA AGM on Thursday 23 August. We will send details closer to the time.

Message from our PTA

Dear parents, 

 

For parents who utilize the school bus system for transport to and from school, our bus escorts have made Whatsapp chat groups that vastly smooths out the logistics of the pick-up times .We would like to remind parents that communication with the Bus Escorts via Whatsapp should be done only between 7am-7pm on matters strictly related to the bus.  For all other queries, please direct to the respective teachers or the Principal or Vice Principal. For any clarifications about the bus policy, the PTA will review on the evening of the AGM on August 23rd.  We kindly appreciate your cooperation, and look forward to hearing your feedback.

Showcase – Jade class

Jade class has been taking initiatives to ‘Green’ our school after learning from the Unit ‘We are the World’.   After reading from the set text ‘10 things I can do to help my world’, we decided to make a poster to remind ourselves of things we can do to contribute to a sustainable environment, both at school and home.  

We have Eco Warriors every day to turn off our lights and air conditioning in classrooms after students leave for their playtime.  We remind ourselves to bring our own lunch boxes instead of using the cardboard lunch boxes for lunch club in the KGV canteen. The Jade class vocational team has also extended the recycling programme not only for paper, plastic, and metal but also for ink cartridges, rechargeable batteries/ small electronic items, and glasses. To do this, we made recycling bins for the new recyclables.

Jade class would like to invite everyone in the JCSRS community to support our ‘Green’ programme!  

Here are the 10 things we can do to help our world:  

Turn off the lights

Turn off the tap (when I brush my teeth)

Put litter in the bin

Use both sides of the paper

Turn off the TV

Use hand dryers instead of paper towels

Walk instead of taking transport

I can recycle

Bring your shopping bag

Stop wasting food

Sailing

Leo and Joel came 3rd in their category for the Open Dinghy Sailing Regatta over the weekend of 26/27 May
They both did a great job sailing and staying cool in the extreme heat 👍🏼☀😎
