Principal’s Message

It’s been a very active and healthy fortnight for our students and staff. I had the pleasure of joining the secondary camp group on the Tuesday for the climbing and ropes activities. My goodness, I am always overwhelmed by the courage and persistence of our students. With the full support of the adults they met many challenges and achieved success. I have had excellent feedback from everyone involved with the camp and say thank you to Mike and the team for putting in all the extra time and effort. You can see plenty of photos later in the newsletter.

Equally impressive was the program for the students who stayed at school. A focus on science allowed opportunities to visit the science museum and have a day of fun and learning in the school hall.

Last Friday three of our students, Lok, Maxx and Hugh had a unique experience of diving in Hoi Ha under the close supervision of Paul who is a fully qualified diving instructor. This day is in preparation for a diving trip in the Philippines. We look forward to hearing all about it in a few weeks time. Thanks Jenny Lingham for coordinating this.

We continue to make improvements to our outdoor area. Jackie has been working closely with a group of students from Island School to tidy up and replant the garden area just next to our playground. It’s looking fabulous and will be full of colour, smells and textures throughout the year.

Preparations for the Christmas Show are well underway. That means Christmas is ‘just around the corner’. This year we have agreed to have a school ‘Giving Tree’ and support the local Hong Kong charity Crossroads (https://www.crossroads.org.hk/). See the two lists below of ‘much needed items’ that we are asking our community to support.

Back to school kits (in a zip-lock’ bag)

Educational toys and musical instruments

Frisbees and skipping ropes, board games, outdoor play items, baby toys, dress up costumes and toys that help motor function

If you are sending large items and your son/daughter comes to school on the bus please check with the PTA bus coordinator. Also label the donation clearly so we know this is for the Giving Tree. We will let you know the last day for accepting donations.

Next week we continue our health and well being focus with the primary and secondary sports days. Parents are welcome to join us on either day. Note also that there is no school for students on Friday 18 November.

Career Fair

Over 50 corporations from a variety of industries came to the KGV Careers Fair on 3 Nov 2016. The annual Fair aims to provide students the opportunity to learn first-hand from industry professionals in order to plan for their future studies and careers.

A huge thank-you to Ms Cheryl Lam (JCSRS Speech Language Pathologist) to support this event.

The event was a huge success. KGV Year 9 Students found it immensely useful, especially when they are at the crossroads of making their options choices.

We look forward to another successful Careers Fair next year.

The divers prepare for their trip

I was delighted to be able to join our three intrepid explorers Lok, Maxx and Hugh at Hoi Ha on Friday 4^th Nov. The three students were completing their final open water preparatory dive before their exciting trip to The Philippines 24/11- 28/11.

Paul, the dive master supported by his two dive masters, took the boys through a variety of underwater safety procedures and the team also spent some time doing an underwater ‘clean up’. They collected an interesting assortment of items including old batteries and pens.

After the dive the students enjoyed a well-earned lunch and the mum’s spent time with Paul checking the arrangements for the trip.

We look forward to hearing the stories when they get back and seeing the pictures and videos….

Showcase – Emerald class

Since the start of term, Emerald Class students have been exposed to a variety of interesting and educational activities. We began our new unit on systems by looking at the transport systems in Hong Kong. We have had great fun walking down the road near our school to look at the traffic light system. We also went on an educational visit to the Kowloon Station and Olympic Station. During the visit, we had a short ride on the MTR train. We have been reading stories related to the unit in our literacy sessions including “On the Go”, “The Train Ride” and “Lost in Hong Kong”. We all enjoyed reading the stories through a range of multi-sensory activities. In the cooking lessons, we have made some yummy muffins and jelly using a variety of switch operated cooking tools. Students also had a great time working with the therapists in the Fun Fitness session on Thursdays. We learned about planting through the “One Student One Plant Scheme”. The highlight of the term is doing sports in the Kowloon Cricket Club. We have participated in a range of indoor and outdoor activities such as tennis, badminton, bowling and table tennis. We actively participated in the whole school Walkathon. The visits to the Pizza Express, Science Museum and Road Safety Town have also provided students with great life experiences in different communities. We will work hard and play hard in the coming terms.
