Principal’s Message

It’s great to have all the students back at school safe and sound. It’s been a tough few days for us all and I certainly hope you did not experience too much damage or loss from the recent typhoon. Besides the many beautiful old trees on the driveway up to school we had minimal damage here. A huge thank you to our support staff team who spent a lot of time to thoroughly prepare.

This week all our teachers and therapists are meeting to draft IEPs. We look forward to sharing these with you at the meetings on Wednesday 3 October. Please remember to book a time on the Gateway.

Last week I shared some photos of the students receiving their ASDAN certificates and it was once again a delight to celebrate with Gold, Emerald and Diamond classes. The more formal ceremony followed by treats and dancing of course. Congratulations to all of our students.

Our PTA met last week for long and productive discussions on fundraising ideas (look out for more details on our Dancathon coming up later in the year), bus routes and services as well as change to our uniform. Many of you will have purchased the new PE shorts and we will have information on the rest of the uniform later this term. The PTA also agreed with the recommendation of our physiotherapist that students wear white runners/sport shoes to school instead of black leather school shoes. She added that the shoes are easy for students to take off and put on themselves – for example velcro straps instead of laces. Of course black shoes are just fine for now and we can transition to the new ‘look’ as we change uniform. If you are needing to buy new school shoes please take this into consideration.

While we are talking about uniform I’d like to mention hats again. All students have some time outside during the week and a hat is a must for health and well-being. If you have a school hat at home please bring it in so it can stay at school. If you do not have a school hat you can purchase one at the front office and leave it at school. If there are still students without hats starting term 2 we will add the cost to the termly account and keep the hat at school. Thank you for helping us with this.

School Hats – $85 Each

This week we welcomed our new OT Jonathan Li. He is looking forward to getting to know our students and our school and some of you will work closely with him in future.

Remember it is a long weekend with no school for students on Monday and public holiday on Tuesday. I wish you happy mid-autumn festival celebrations with family and friends.

Warm Regards

Karin

Showcase – Gold class

Gold class have had a fantastic first half of the term, we have welcomed three new students to the class. Castro, Ankit and Jacob now join Colman, Boris, Jonathan, Adrian, Marcus and Aryan.

This term our topic is ‘Express Yourself’ and students have been busy exploring different ways to express themselves. We have participated in African Drumming classes, Move for Life dance and a Shakespeare 4 All drama workshop, students are enjoying these creative activities and look forward to all of the sessions. In class we have been exploring our feelings through colours as well as learning about kindness buckets and expected and unexpected behaviour.

In maths we have focused on number work, this ties in with our ASDAN unit for the year. This term we will prepare for a shopping trip, students have already started to plan where they will go and who they will go with.

Students have also enjoyed sharing their weekend photos with their friends during circle time, sharing toys during class play, visiting the SENsations Cafe and KGV to buy a snack and using the Sensory Integration room during therapy sessions.

Finally, last week we celebrated the achievements of our students through the ASDAN Awards party, our JCSRS students from last year were each awarded a certificate for achieving their ICT unit of work, the students worked very hard to complete this unit and should be proud of their achievements. Congratulations Marcus, Aryan, Colman, Adrian, Boris, Jonathan and Jacob.

It’s been a busy but fun first couple of months in Gold Class and we are looking forward to what the rest of the year will bring!
